– Marisa Yiu and Tereo Kurosaki (Curators)
The Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design (AoD) for the first time launched a new cultural design exchange programme. DETOUR DeX 2010’s partner city was Tokyo. Curated by Teruo Kurosaki (Tokyo, Founder of Flowstone Industries) and Marisa Yiu (Hong Kong, Founding Partner of ESKYIU), Designer’s Exchange (DeX Detour) is an exhibition and events of cross-disciplinary works created by emerging artists and designers from Hong Kong and Japan.
Hong Kong designers visited Tokyo, exchanged and shared with Japanese designers. DeX Detour aims to promote and encourage cultural and ideas transfer, and provide a model for cross-cultural dialogue and creation.
Hong Kong Designers/ Artists included Adrian Wong, Prudence Mak (Chocolate Rain), Philip Lau + Grace Leung (Cowrice), Henry Chu (pill & pillow), Jaffa Lam, Kathy Kuk + Tat Chan (Graphic Airlines), Michael Leung (Studio Leung) and Margaret Xu. Under the main theme of ‘NOT GUILTY’; Hong Kong Designers worked under the theme of “AESTHETICS . ETHICS: designing with innocence”. From Japan, Designers worked under the theme of “PURE WATER DESIGN: vision for the future” that includes Jin Kuramoto, MILE (Bandai Matsuo, Kentaro Kai, Kozo Shimoyama), Hironao Tsuboi, Nick Rennie, NOSIGNER, Hideyuki Nakayama, Jiro Hirano, Masakatsu Takagi, Yasuhiro Suzuki and Kotaro Watanabe. The works exhibited are a reflection on their different ways of understanding issues of purity and play, designing with innocence, aesthetics vs. ethics, interactions of users, and challenge what makes contemporary design relevant to society today. This project is supported by JIDPO, AoD and CREATEHK.
